Athabasca River

Join us for a day trip on the mighty Athabasca. We will put in at the Snye, paddle to a suitable sandbar for lunch, and continue to our take out at the Bridge to Nowhere just before Fort McKay. More stops can be made to explore and stretch! Plan for a full day on the water.

This is a recreational paddle suitable for paddlers comfortable in Class I moving water.

What to Bring:

  • Kayak, canoe, or paddleboard (club can supply)

  • PFD (mandatory, club can supply)

  • A drybag (preferred, trip leader can supply) or backpack for gear with: food for the full day in waterproof packaging, a change of clothes in case of capsize, extra layers for weather changes (fleece, gloves, toque, rain gear), and insect repellant and sunblock.

  • A smile and your paddling spirit!

Further nice to have items can be found on the map linked above. The trip leader will carry a first aid kit and a satellite communication device.

First come, first serve front country camping is available or book your camping spot online at Crow Lake Campground. Find tips on what to bring here. This is a BYO (Bring Your Own) Camping Gear event. Participants are responsible for their own camping equipment, food and water. Clearwater Float - Draper to the Snye

Clearwater Community Float – Draper to the Snye 🛶

Looking for a relaxing evening on the water with great company and beautiful scenery? Join us for the Clearwater Community Float, a laid-back paddling adventure perfect for anyone who enjoys being outdoors and spending time on the river.

We'll meet at Draper and launch onto the Clearwater River, allowing the current to do most of the work as we enjoy a leisurely float downstream toward the Snye. Along the way, we'll connect with paddlers from the Club who have completed their upstream fitness paddle, bringing both groups together for a fun and social journey back to town.

This is not a race and no special paddling skills are required beyond basic comfort on the water. The focus is on enjoying the river, meeting new people, and taking in the natural beauty of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo.

What to Expect:

• A relaxing downstream float on the Clearwater River

• Minimal paddling effort required

• Beautiful river views and wildlife sightings

• A friendly, welcoming, and social atmosphere

• Great opportunities for photos and making memories

• A perfect way to spend a summer evening outdoors

Poplar Creek Reservoir Flatwater Paddle

Join us for a relaxing flatwater paddle at the beautiful Poplar Creek Reservoir! This outing is perfect for beginner and intermediate paddlers looking to enjoy a peaceful day on the water while exploring one of the region's hidden gems.

We'll launch from the reservoir shoreline  and spend our time paddling calm, sheltered waters surrounded by northern Alberta's natural beauty. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, enjoy the quiet scenery, and take the opportunity to practice your paddling skills in a comfortable environment.

Whether you're looking to build confidence in your kayak or canoe, enjoy some light exercise, or simply spend time outdoors with fellow paddlers, this trip offers something for everyone.

What to Expect:

  • Calm flatwater conditions (weather dependent)

  • Beginner-friendly pace

  • Approximately 2 hours on the water

Fitness Paddle

Fitness Paddle & Clearwater Float Adventure

Looking for a fun way to stay active while enjoying some of Fort McMurray's most beautiful waterways?

Join the Borealis Paddling Club for a unique paddling adventure that combines fitness, endurance, and relaxation into one unforgettable evening on the water!

We'll launch from the Snye and work our way upstream toward Draper, challenging ourselves with a steady fitness paddle that will get the heart pumping and the muscles working. Paddle at your own pace while enjoying the scenery, fresh air, and camaraderie of fellow paddlers.

Once we reach Draper, we'll meet up with the Clearwater Float Group and trade effort for relaxation as we drift downstream on the Clearwater River. Sit back, take in the views, share stories with friends old and new, and enjoy a peaceful float back toward town.

What to Expect:

✅ A moderate fitness-focused paddle upstream

✅ Beautiful river scenery and wildlife viewing opportunities

✅ A social and supportive group atmosphere

✅ A relaxing downstream float to finish it off

Glow Paddle

It’s the third annual Glow Paddle down the Clearwater River! Boat decorating will begin at 6:00 pm at the Raphael Cree Park and Boat Launch followed by a leisurely paddle down the Clearwater River arriving at the Snye.

Vehicle shuttle arrangements to be determined based on participants. Please indicate on your sign up if you are available to help shuttle before or after the event. All are welcome to stay for an end of season campfire after the paddle with prizes for the best decorated boats.

The membership fee is waived for new members at this event, however, participants must sign the club waiver. Limited seats are available in club canoes and/or kayaks. We hope you can join us to light up the Clearwater River in Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo!

Join us for a day on the mighty Athabasca from the Snye to the Bridge to Nowhere. Plan for 6-12 hours depending on water levels. Find the map and more information on the trip here.
